OK; after building today's -CURRENT, I "cloned" the slice in question
(3) to slice 2 (dump|restore; then tweaked fstab), re-booted from slice
2, applied the patches (no problems), then rebuilt the kernel ("make
kernel..."), the re-booted again. (The machine in question is a Dell
Inspiron 5000e.)

I don't see any new problems. Comparing the files created from acpidump
vs. older (saved) versions of these files shows no difference.

Creating a unidiff of logged messages (default verbose boot), I
have extracted the following that may be of interest (- is before
the acpica patches; + is after):

-localhost kernel: Timecounter "TSC" frequency 746758170 Hz

As noted, to the extent that any of these are problems, I have no
reason to believe that they are new ones.
