Folks, this is a heads up message for the Documentation Project, x-posted
to -doc and -committers.

I intend to freeze the doc/handbook/ portion of the CVS repository[1] at
00:00 GMT on Wednesday 16th December. During the freeze, no new commits
should be made to doc/handbook/.

At the same time, no commits should be made to doc/en/handbook/ without
going through me first.

This should allow me to finish merging in changes from the LinuxDoc
version of the Handbook to the DocBook version (which is currently a bit
of a moving target).

If you would like to test the current state of play as regards the
conversion of the Handbook to various formats (PS, PDF, HTML, RTF,
plain text) please see my message to -doc with the message ID

    19981210203033.34618@nothing-going-on.org

When the merge is complete I'll post a call for testers to confirm that
the DocBook version of the Handbook builds and installs correctly on their
machines. After confirmations have come through I'll update doc/Makefile
to use doc/en/handbook to generate the Handbook. However, if you're
interested in testing this, let me know now and I'll make sure you get
e-mailed specifically when it's ready.

A few days after that, the LinuxDoc version can die (die! die! die! -- sorry,
got a trifle carried away there).

Now would also be a good time to consult

    <URL:http://www.freebsd.org/~nik/primer/index.html>

(and very shortly after this message is sent out you should be able
to replace index.html with one of book.html.gz, book.rtf.gz, book.pdf.gz,
book.ps.gz, and book.txt.gz) which is a draft of a Doc. Proj. primer for
committers and contributers. It's unfinished, but is hopefully sufficiently
complete that existing contributers and committers will be able to use it
to understand the new Handbook.

It also showcases what the output from the conversion process looks like
(including the rather spiffy PDF with embedded links). I'd do the same
for the Handbook (for those who just want to see it rather than build it)
but that'll have to wait until I buy a new hard disk tomorrow.

If you're a frequent Handbook contributor, now would also be a good time
to take a poke through doc/en/handbook/ and familiarise yourself with
it.

N

[1] Or rather, John Polstra will freeze it for me. In theory, commits will
actually be prevented from happening. I'd be grateful if no one
    tried to test this however.
